Eugene/Springfield Leadership Round Table

The HUD Oregon Field Office and the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco invite you to a Leadership Round Table to kick off a Community Needs Assessment in Lane County.  This initiative is part of HUD’s “place based” strategy to work with local partners to solve locally identified issues; meet locally driven community goals; focus resources on issue resolution; and provide a venue for increased collaboration across HUD’s programs with other federal agencies and with local partners.

The Eugene/Springfield metro area of Lane County has made great strides to identify and address the region’s long term planning needs.  The Livability Lane Consortium, which was spurred by a HUD Sustainable Communities Grant, brought together Lane County, Oregon, regional leaders in economic development, higher education, transportation, affordable housing, water and energy, and social equity to build upon the Eugene-Springfield region’s successes and to further integrate livability into regional plans and strategies.   The Department hopes to build on this success by helping to implement the plans and strategies identified through the coalition, identifying opportunities for federal technical assistance, and clearing road blocks to success. 

Through the two-year Community Needs Assessment process, HUD will identify ways to optimize collaboration and consensus between stakeholders; identify unspent or poorly spent federal funds; and leverage and align federal resources with those being provided in the community, such as local, state, nonprofit, philanthropic, and private investments. HUD leadership in the Oregon Field Office will develop a two year work plan for HUD staff to assist the community.

At the Leadership Round Table on April 9th, we will discuss variety of housing and community development challenges and potential solutions, and join in a dialogue on our next steps. Some of the issues to be discussed include:

• Recommendations of Lane Livability consortium
• Opportunities for brownfield redevelopment
• Preservation and development of affordable housing through the HUD Rental Assistance Demonstration
• Mobile home parks: long term viability and housing alternatives
• Riverfront development

A detailed agenda and community profile report will be shared in advance of the meeting.  Participants are encouraged to provide feedback on presentations and share their own ideas, to help build a shared vision of future housing and community development in Eugene/Springfield, and an identification of resources to make it happen.
