On the Edge: America’s Middle Neighborhoods

Join us for a discussion on Middle Neighborhoods—those neighborhoods across America that are not in deep distress, but are not thriving either. Learn what makes these “on the edge” communities important to cities and why increasing attention on these areas is critical to preventing decline and building long-term social and economic vitality.

Paul Brophy will describe the characteristics and history of middle neighborhoods and the challenges they face, share examples of preservation strategies, and discuss the policy and program changes that could support efforts to improve these communities. Local experts will offer their perspectives on what Middle Neighborhoods mean to the Bay Area.
