San Francisco, CA – The Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco announced that George Zinn, corporate vice president and treasurer of Microsoft Corporation and John E. “Jack” Pelo, president and CEO of Swire Coca-Cola USA, were appointed chair and vice chair of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco’s Economic Advisory Council (EAC). Mr. Zinn and Mr. Pelo joined the EAC in 2012 and 2013, respectively.
In addition, James Beer, executive vice president and CFO, McKesson Corporation, Jake Boyer, president and CEO of the Boyer Company, Kevin Leader, treasurer of Bechtel Corporation, and Mary Pat Thompson, CFO and senior vice president of MWI Veterinary Supply, were appointed as the newest members of the EAC. Ian T. Clark, CEO of Genentech, and Philip L. Francis, retired executive chairman of PetSmart, were reappointed as members.
Prior to becoming treasurer, Mr. Zinn’s previous role at Microsoft was CFO of the Intellectual Property & Licensing Division. He joined Microsoft in 1996. He holds an AB in economics from Bowdoin College and an MBA from the University of Washington. Mr. Zinn serves as an investment adviser to the Alaska Permanent Fund Corporation and the Washington State Opportunities Scholarship Fund. In addition, he is an industry faculty member and board advisor to the University of Washington Computational Finance and Risk Management Master’s program.
Mr. Pelo has been president and CEO of Swire Coca-Cola USA, a subsidiary of Swire Pacific Limited in Hong Kong, since 1996. Prior to becoming president, he served as a division manager, based in Walla Walla, Washington. He has been a director of Key Technology since 1998. Mr. Pelo holds a BA in business administration from Washington State University.
As CFO of McKesson, Mr. Beer is responsible for overseeing all financial functions for the company. McKesson provides a broad range of sourcing, distribution, and technology solutions to the health care industry in both North America and Europe. Prior to this role, Mr. Beer served as the CFO of two other companies: Symantec Corporation, a security and storage software company, and AMR Corp., the owner of American Airlines. Prior to his first CFO role, Mr. Beer ran the European and Pacific business of American Airlines. Mr. Beer holds a BS in aeronautical engineering from Imperial College, London University, and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
Mr. Boyer became president in 2006 and CEO in 2011 of the Boyer Company, a real estate development firm. His community participation includes serving as a chairman of the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce, Membership Committee chairman of the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Development Board. He is a guest lecturer at Brigham Young University, University of Utah, the Urban Land Institute, and the International Convention of Shopping Centers. Mr. Boyer received his BS in finance from Brigham Young University and his MS in real estate development from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Mr. Leader is principal vice president and treasurer of Bechtel Corporation, a San Francisco-based global engineering and construction company. He joined Bechtel in 2001 as director of corporate finance. Prior to these roles, he spent more than 15 years in corporate banking, most recently as a managing director at Bank of America. He serves on the board of CORO Center for Civic Leadership, the Chabot Space & Science Center’s Foundation Board, and is a member of the Investment Committee for the Diocese of Oakland, California. Mr. Leader has a BS in finance and accounting from Saint Mary’s College of California and a MBA from Santa Clara University.
Ms. Thompson has been MWI Veterinary Supply’s CFO since 2002 and senior vice president since 2006. Her previous roles include controller of Agri Beef’s Feedlot and Commodity Division and working in auditing and accounting services at Arthur Anderson. She is a member of the University of Idaho College of Business and Economics Advisory Board and member and past president of the American Veterinary Distributors Association. Ms. Thompson graduated from the University of Idaho with a BS in accounting, summa cum laude.
Mr. Clark joined Genentech in 2003 as senior vice president and general manager, BioOncology. In 2005 he was named senior vice president, Commercial Operation and, in January 2006, was named executive vice president, Commercial Operations. He received a BS in biological sciences from Southampton University in the United Kingdom.
Mr. Francis joined Petsmart in 1988. Prior to this role, he was president and CEO of Shaw’s Supermarkets, Inc. Mr. Francis is past chairman and currently serves on the board of the Greater Phoenix Leadership Board, Phoenix Teach for America Board, and the Arizona Commerce Authority Board. He is a graduate of the University of Illinois and the Indiana University Business School.
EAC members provide the Bank’s senior management with information on current and pending developments in the regional and national economies. All members serve three year terms.
